WHO WE ARE

The South Dakota Afterschool Network works to better our state and its communities by connecting providers, parents and policymakers with proven tools and resources to increase the quality of and access to out-of-school time programming for K-12 children and youth.

Mission

The mission of the South Dakota Afterschool Network is to support and sustain quality afterschool, out of school time (OST) and youth development programs to serve the needs of South Dakota’s youth.

Vision

We envision a state where all children have access to high-quality, safe and affordable programming that supports successful academic and positive social outcomes for students, parents, schools and communities.

Afterschool in South Dakota

Afterschool is a lifeline that keeps youth safe, helps kids learn and grow, and provides parents the ability to work without worry. While South Dakota is home to more than 300 afterschool programs, the demand for programs exceeds available spaces.

In fact, 1 in 3 South Dakota children (34 percent) who are not in an afterschool program would be enrolled if it were available. That’s more than 42,000 children who are missing out on opportunities to participate in programming that supports their development academically, socially and economically.

About the 50 State Afterschool Network

The 50 State Afterschool Network is the aggregate of 50 independent networks, sharing the collective impact and innovations in supporting and expanding afterschool and summer learning programs nationwide.
Seeking positive outcomes for children to succeed in school and future jobs, a statewide afterschool network brings together cross-sector leaders with a common vision and coordinated strategy to advance quality afterschool and summer learning programs.
In every state an afterschool network is broadening opportunities for youth.

WHAT WE DO

Quality

We’re committed to advancing high-quality standards among out-of-school times programs across the state, by providing resources, education, and tools that empower programs to provide the best possible environment for youth.

STEM

We support access to STEM learning through our Think, Make, Create Carts providing programs hundreds of free activities that inspire curiosity and engagement in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Indigenous Engagement

SDAN works to expand afterschool access for Indigenous populations by providing tailored support, resources, and opportunities that honor and uplift their unique cultures and needs.

Youth Voice

We’re keeping youth front-of-mind by creating meaningful opportunities for input where youth can use their voice to help shape community and bring their unique perspective to the table.
