America After 3PM Report

Before the coronavirus pandemic struck, the Afterschool Alliance released findings of the 2020 America After 3PM Report. The findings of this report are based on survey responses from more than 30,000 American households, including 271 in-depth interviews in South Dakota. Results showed that South Dakota mirrors the findings from the rest of the nation.

Key Findings:

Demand for Afterschool Grows, Opportunity Shrinks

Support for afterschool programs is strong, with parents giving high marks to programs for giving working parents peace of mind, helping parents keep their jobs, and helping children gain interest and skills in STEM.

However, despite the appeal of afterschool programs parents are struggling with challenges such as:

  • Expense
  • Lack of availability
  • Safe Transportation to get children to and from programs

For every 1 child in afterschool, 3 are waiting to get in.

25 million children aren’t able to access an afterschool program.

Black and Latinx children are impacted the most.

Afterschool is critical to the success of South Dakota

87% of parents support public funding for afterschool programs (an all-time high!) and support is strong across both political parties.
