South Dakota Afterschool Conference

The 2020 South Dakota Afterschool Conference was a tremedous success!

Although program staff throughout the state are facing extraordinary challenges, the first-ever virtual conference had record-breaking attendance with more than 250 attendees registered, and conference replay videos have received nearly 200 views!

With topics in Trauma Informed Care, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and Equity, the conference featured expert presenters from across the country, including Texas, California, Georgia, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Washington state, and South Dakota.

We are grateful for the support of our funders who made this event possible, including the CS Mott Foundation, South Dakota Community Foundation, South Dakota Department of Education, and the STEM Next Opportunity Fund.

Out-of-School Time Director’s Retreat

Out-of-School Time (OST) Directors have the opportunity to re-charge in April of each year with a three-day retreat in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota!

Imagine waking up to a view of Mt. Rushmore and watching deer play just a few feet from your breakfast table. Take your coffee with as you move to the conference center to hear an amazing motivational speaker, participate in a stimulating focus group, and hear the latest in social and emotional learning. Cap off the day exchanging ideas with your fellow OST Directors around a camp fire! This is a realistic sample of the treat Directors have waiting for them each year in Keystone, SD.

Begun in 2003 by the Department of Child Care Services and organized for the last several years by SoDakSACA, this event has brought nationally respected trainers from across the United States to South Dakota. The South Dakota Afterschool Network is pleased to partner with SoDakSACA in bringing high quality training opportunities to Afterschool Directors in our state.

Children’s Day at the Capital

One day is set aside every year during the legislative session for Out-of-School Time (OST) professionals and programs to assemble in the capitol rotunda in Pierre to celebrate Afterschool Day at the Capitol. This event is coordinated by the South Dakota Afterschool Network (SDAN) and the South Dakota School-Age Care Alliance (SoDakSACA) to bring awareness of the importance of afterschool to South Dakota’s legislative body. Children’s Day at the Capitol certainly looks a lot different this year. We’ve pivoted in response to COVID and are looking forward to chatting virtually with legislators on February 1, 2021.
