The South Dakota Afterschool Network works to better our state and its communities by connecting providers, parents and policymakers with proven tools and resources to increase the quality of and access to out-of-school time programming for K-12 children and youth.

Afterschool is a lifeline that keeps youth safe, helps kids learn and grow, and provides parents the ability to work without worry. While South Dakota is home to more than 300 afterschool programs, the demand for programs exceeds available spaces. In fact, 1 in 3 South Dakota children (34 percent) who are not in an afterschool program would be enrolled if it were available. That’s more than 42,000 children who are missing out on opportunities to participate in programming that supports their development academically, socially and economically.

Afterschool can provide valuable opportunities for students to explore STEM, and we are here to help your program succeed in STEM Learning! From webinars and trainings to our signature TMC Trailers that bring turnkey STEM activities to your doorstep, our diverse collection of resources meets you and your students where you are and provides the support you need to deliver quality programming to your students at any age.

The South Dakota Afterschool Network wanted to create a mapping tool to better understand the landscape of afterschool and summer programs available for children and families. From the initial launch of the new mapping tool, we have identified some startling findings.

Indigenous Engagement

SDAN is committed to providing Indigenous communities and stakeholders with the support necessary to increase the number of accessible programs near or on tribal entities. Your donation will ensure SDAN has the resources to continue building avenues of support and a continued presence through STEM-based outreach education during Indigenous events and programs.

Youth Voices

Youth voices belong at every table. That’s why SDAN is working to provide youth the leadership skills necessary and opportunities to become engaged civic leaders. Your donation will help to support the Youth Opportunity Project and annual cohort providing teens across the state with mentorship and guidence as they support the importance of afterschool.

STEM and Entrepreneurship Programs

Providing STEM education through the Think, Make, Create Mobile Labs is a free resource that SDAN makes available to all programs across the state. These trailers loaded with over 100 STEM activities and supplies allows programs who might not otherwise have the funds or capacity to provide kids with experiences that support academic growth and peak interest in STEM related fields. Your donation will ensure TMC Mobile Labs and entrepreneurial opportunities are made available to as many programs as possible.

Program Quality

South Dakota is one of just six states to not have out-of-school time program standards. SDAN is working to change that by working with statewide partners to ensure every program has a set of guidelines that ensures safe, high-quality experiences for youth. Your donation will support the implementation and further development of a comprehensive program that aims to give programs the blueprint to creating experiences for youth that produce successful outcomes.

Youth Success

Youth Success is built into to everything we do. Providing programs with the tools and educational resources necessary to support the needs of students today. When students social-emotional needs are met, they are able to find success in all areas of life from inside the classroom to home.
